A talk with Red Foreman
Updated: Apr 25, 2021
Just by looking at (or hearing) the title of this article, it might leave some to remember an old television show called "That 70's Show". The name Red belongs to a character with a very stern outlook on life, and a tendency to cut any mortal to the core with just one brief encounter. Well this Red Foreman isn't a pissed off old guy, but the watch out for your core.
Recently i was able to have a talk and pick the mind of Red Foreman that opened up into a conversation that lead into the best look at genuine old school inspiration and execution with new techniques and a unique methodology. There isn't much more to say than this band's leader Alex, is a dangerous musician.
DSE: Where did you come up with your band name, and what was your inspiration to start this band?
Alex: I was playing shows as "The Great Expectations" for a while, and I thought that sounded like i was taking myself too seriously. I was pretty stoned one night at the studio ( The night before i had been watching episodes of "That 70's Show") so when the band that was there recording asked me what my band name was, I just said Red Foreman, And they laughed their asses off. Everyone I told thought it was a really tight band name, so I changed it on all the social media pages, and I've been putting out music like that ever since. Red Forman is the name of the dad on "That 70's Show", so I added an "e" to avoid all the copyright bullshit.
DSE: Good job dodging the copyright problem, and yea, that's a dope ass back story, so tell us about your project you recently released and how it came about.
Alex: O-Kay, so I graduated from Extreme Institute in December, and around that time is when i started recording some songs with Ryan Wasoba, He's actually the one who produced my favorite band Foxing's first album back in 2013. I also did my internship with him while i was in school. He's the coolest person I've ever met and I'm glad to call him a good friend now.
I had six acoustic songs ready to record that i wanted to do with Mat Kerekes from the band citizen, because i fucking loved the solo record he put out last year. So, eventually he emails me back, and tells me he's got a week in February where we can record at his home in Toledo, Ohio. The week before i was supposed to leave, I lost every demo I had recorded and all the lyrics because my phone crashed. I decided not to panic and just write six new songs when i got to Toledo. So every song on the EP was written in the five days i was in Toledo staying in this little motel on the side of the highway. I would record all day with Mat til around 7 them go back to the hotel and write lyrics.
Dean Tartaglia from the band Secret Space came by and played saxophone on my song Cloudy Eyes which was amazing. I loved Secret Space since their first EP.
We finished it February 14th and i decided to release it in the same day because i was just so happy with how it sounded.
The first Red Foremn Show is July 23rd at FOAM in ST. Louis, I will be opening up for ADJY,Lobby Boxer, & Jr. Clooney.
I'm currently recording more music with Ryan Wasoba, and that should be coming out this fall.
DSE: Tell us more about The Universe Doesn't Give A Shit About You, how it got its title, and what you were looking for fans to feel or think when they hear it.
Alex: I was going through a really bad break up at the time and i did Acid at a Foxing concert. it was like the lights in my head finally went on and i realized how unhappy i was with my life and that the only one that could change it was me. Because my friends certainly can't, and the universe doesn't give a shit about me or anyone for that matter. So i just started doing things the way I wanted to do them. That EP deals with a lot of feelings of the doubts you feel caused by others and yourself. I was really bummed at the time I wrote it but getting all of that out there put me in a much better state of mind.
DSE: So this was basically like your coming into understanding yourself and taking on the universe head on.
Alex: Yeah! As cliche as it sounds, musician does drugs and finds himself. Hahaha!
DSE: Lh That's what's up though, That's what made many legends.
Alex: The next album I'm doing is INSANE! Ryan produced the hell out of this thing, it's so good, honestly!
DSE: So, what would you say is one of your favorite songs on this project of yours?
Alex: Hopeless is my favorite, because I feel like that's just always gonna be relevant to my life. Nonchalant is another favorite just because i really got bored of the Midwest and that's what it's about.
DSE: That's dope! What more would you want to say to anyone that reads this?
Alex: I want people to know that if something makes them unhappy, they don't have to do it. Just always live for yourself.
DSE: That's a message the world needs.
If you think you might be interested in embarking on a trippy sonic adventure lead by 90's and early 2000's influenced drum breaks, and soaring out of this world melodies that will put you in mind of The Beatles, Then look no further. Red Foreman's The Universe Doesn't Give A Shit About You is your trip.
